CAPE MAY – Members of U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May are scheduled to participate in multiple Patriot Day ceremonies throughout Cape May County, Sept. 11, in remembrance of the Sept.11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Coast Guardsmen from the training center are scheduled to support numerous ceremonies by providing color guards, buglers, firing parties and keynote speakers at the events.
Each of those ceremonial services will serve as a key element to the many local remembrance ceremonies being held in the area.
“These service members grew up in a world where terrorism is not something that occurs in other places in the world, but is a real, and very tangible threat, right here at home. They grew up in the wake of a horrific attack on our country that cost the lives of 2,977 innocent people one September morning,” stated Capt. Owen Gibbons, commanding officer of Training Center Cape May in a release.
“It is an honor and a privilege to see these young men and women fulfill their duty to protect and defend the United States of America. That is a challenge each and every one of them is willing to face,” he added.
Members of the training center’s Command and Ceremonial Detail will begin with a wreath laying event at the Douglas Munro statue onboard the training center, at 8 a.m.
Following that, members of the command along with a firing party, color guard and bugler will participate in the Cape May County Freeholders 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in Court House scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Lastly, members of the training center command and ceremonial will participate in City of Cape May’s Patriot Day Ceremony at the Cove, at the intersection of Second Street and Beach Avenue at 6:15 p.m.
