CAPE MAY – The Coast Guard Training Center’s first Sunset Parade of 2018 took place July 1 on the parade ground before several hundred veterans, family members and others from the public.
The recruit battalion was inspected by the official party headed by Commanding Officer Capt. Owen Gibbons and the director of Liberty United Services Organizations (USO) at Philadelphia International Airport. Liberty USO is where recruits meet prior to boarding buses to begin their training.
As part of the evening’s ceremony, the Silent Drill Team performed.
Precisely at 8:29 p.m., cannon was fired, the “Star Spangled Banner” was struck up by the recruit band and the American flag was lowered.
Finally, the battalion passed in review, saluted by Gibbons. As the recruit companies marched off the parade ground, the sunset deepened.
The next Sunset Parade will be held Aug. 4, Coast Guard Day, weather permitting. It will be open to the public.
