WEST CAPE MAY – To celebrate World Oceans Day, The Surfrider Foundation, South Jersey Chapter and the West Cape May Environmental Commission invite the community to a free screening of ‘A Plastic Ocean’ June 7, at 7 p.m., at West Cape May Borough Hall.
This documentary is directed by Craig Leeson, an Australian journalist. The movie is rated PG and is suitable for adults and teenagers.
Following the screening of the film, the Surfrider Foundation, South Jersey Chapter will present a panel discussion about the importance of rethinking our use of plastic, especially single-use plastic. Light refreshments will be served.
West Cape May Borough Hall is located at 732 Broadway in West Cape May. There is plenty of free parking and the building is wheelchair accessible.
On June 8 each year, we celebrate the ocean, its importance in our lives, and how we can protect it. World Oceans Day helps raise the profile of the ocean and inspire more involvement in helping to conserve this amazing resource we all depend on. The action focus for this year’s World Oceans Day is ‘preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean.’
“The film, ‘A Plastic Ocean,’ has such an important environmental message for our seaside community,” stated Hilary Pritchard, chairman of the West Cape May Environmental Commission. “It is a perfect way to celebrate World Oceans Day, and make a change.”
According to plasticoceans.org, “Plastic waste is collecting in our oceans at an alarming rate; there are no signs of it stopping. We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of new plastic every year and half of this is designed for single-use. We need solutions to our plastic problem – working together by raising awareness we can trigger real social change and can motivate others in workplaces, schools, and communities to create an ongoing ripple effect from the film by pledging to ‘Rethink Plastic!’.”
Plastic Oceans Foundation is a global charitable organization that aims to change the world’s attitude to plastic in a single generation. The organization aims to limit the demand for non-essential plastic, using the Ocean as a litmus test to monitor the impact of this man-made pollution crisis on human health.
