Future and current Friends of Cape May Wildlife Refuge are invited to an public meeting where the successes of 2009, ongoing progressions, and future projects and goals will be discussed.
The meeting will be held March 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Center for Research and Education, 600 Route 47 North, Cape May Court House.
Speakers include Cape May National Wildlife Refuge Manager Howard Schlegel and Friends of Cape May NWR Board Members Shawn Lockyear and John King.
This will be a great opportunity to meet fellow Friends and learn how you can get involved while sipping wine and nibbling cheeses donated by Cape May’s very own Seaside Cheese Company. Support for the evening also came from Joe Canal’s in Rio Grande.
The Refuge’s three divisions, Two Mile Beach Unit, Great Cedar Swamp Division and Delaware Bay Division, encompass about 11,500 acres of ecologically critical habitat for thousands of migratory shorebirds, songbirds, raptors and waterfowl passing through each year.
Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge work on behalf of the National System to provide financial and technical support and serves as a liaison between the Refuge and the local community.
“Increasing public awareness of the importance of the Refuge to migratory birds and other wildlife is essential to its protection,” stated Cristina Frank, New Jersey Audubon Society biologist and Friends of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge board member. “One way to achieve this is to invite the community to participate in restoration and improvement projects occurring on the Refuge.”
The biggest thing we can do, as a community, is to learn more about local environmental issues and take proactive steps toward improving environmental quality.
