WILDWOOD — Trolley’s aren’t just for shuttling summer visitors back and forth along the oceanfront here.
The ding ding of the trolley bell can be heard year round as it makes its way through the Wildwoods and out to K-Mart and the adjacent Grande Village shopping center in Rio Grande.
The trolley company named for the Wildwoods is neither electric nor a railway, but that doesn’t stop the gas-powered trolleys from providing transportation to locals and visitors alike for the price of $2 per person each way. Seniors ride for free if the present their county issued identification.
The oceanfront summer route, also called the red route, runs daily service from 9 a.m. to midnight. Riders can pick up a trolley approximately every 20 minutes as it makes it way along Sea View and Jefferson avenues in Wildwood Crest, follows Atlantic and Ocean avenues and ends at the Schellenger Avenue trolley stop. From the Schellenger Avenue stop, passengers can transfer over to the green route that continues to Rio Grande and North Wildwood.
During the winter there is only one trolley and it runs on a much tighter schedule. Expect either a bus or a trolley, depending on what mode of transportation is available that day.
The winter, or orange route, travels to Rio Grande, Wildwood, North Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest. The orange route is active from 9:30 a.m. a.m. till about 4:30 p.m., according to information on company’s Web site www.gatrolley.com.
The Wildwoods isn’t the only shore community to hear the clanging of trolley bells. Summer routes are also available in Cape May, Stone Harbor, Avalon, and Ocean City.
