COURT HOUSE – Anxious to see Cape May County up close and personal from a bike seat? Many municipalities have bike paths or bike lanes that offer safe pedaling for touring or commuting.
A. Seven Mile Beach:
Avalon and Stone Harbor have bike lanes, properly designated. In Stone Harbor on Second Avenue the path leads north to south. In Avalon, where Second Avenue becomes Dune Drive, the lane continues.
B. Five Mile Beach:
Wildwood Crest, the bike path is located just off the beach from Rambler Road to Cresse Avenue, the Wildwood-Wildwood Crest border.
Wildwood, a bike ramp connector makes easy access to the Boardwalk. The elevated wood and concrete walk continues for 2.5 miles. It connects with North Wildwood’s bike path between 15th and 16th avenues.
North Wildwood’s bike path continues north from the Wildwood-North Wildwood border on the beach through the Mulberry Grove to Third Avenue and the sea wall.
C. Woodbine:
Borough’s three-mile bike path, asphalt paved, is on the former railroad line parallels C.R. 550.
In nearby Belleplain State Park, located in Dennis Township, there are a series of trails through the forest best ridden on a mountain or hybrid bike.
D. Middle Township:
Three segments, total 4.2 miles, links Cape May County Park and Zoo, Atlantic Cape Community College, 4-H Fairgrounds and Davies Sports Complex to Indian Trail Road in the south.
Fourth phase, a $198,020 project, will connect Indian Trail Road to Main Street Whitesboro.
Fifth phase, a $360,000 project to link Main Street, Whitesboro with Satt Boulevard, Rio Grande.
E. Lower Township:
Cold Spring Bike Path: 2.72 miles, asphalt paved. Opened Dec. 4, 2002, parallels railroad tracks and Route 9. Erma to Cold Spring. Riders exit on Sandman Boulevard, continuing west to the Cape May-Lewes Ferry or on Seashore Road to Cape May and Cape May Point.
F. Cape Island:
Marked bike lane along Seashore Road from bridge over Cape May Canal into West Cape May, Cape May and Cape May Point.
A bike lane on Sunset Boulevard connects Cape May to Cape May Point where a state park and lighthouse are located.
G. Corson’s Inlet State Park:
Between Strathmere and Ocean City on Ocean Drive (C.R. 619) a short path runs on the upper dunes. A plan is proposed that would extend it to 59th Street to make park access from the city easier.
H. Ocean City:
A bike lane-road share connects Ninth Street to 34th Street through the center of the city.
