TRENTON – A resolution sponsored by Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st) to designate the Sunset Lake Hydrofest in Wildwood Crest as the New Jersey Governor’s Cup Hydrofest Series recently became law.
“The Sunset Lake Hydrofest has always been an exciting powerboat race that takes place annually in Wildwood Crest in the fall,” said Senator Van Drew. “This events is perfect for families because it couples high speed racing with crafts, merchandise, and various food vendors. Thousands of tourists flock to the area for this final event in the nation’s Hydroplane Super Series.”
The enacted measure, SJR-27, requires that a perpetual trophy be provided by the governing body of the race to designate the event as the New Jersey Governor’s Cup of the Sunset Lake Hydrofest in Wildwood Crest.
“This law will help give Statewide recognition to this powerboat race and will hopefully increase the number of visitors to the area in the fall,” said Van Drew. “Tourism is so vital to this State, and during tough economic times, families are looking for close and affordable entertainment. I hope that this year’s Hydrofest will have even more in-and out-of -State tourists then last year. I believe that once people visit New Jersey– they will keep coming back.”
The bill was unanimously approved by the Senate Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee October 6, 2008 and also unanimously approved by the full Senate
on October 23, 2008. The measure became law on May 4, 2009.
