Three Towns Plan to Share Public Access Channel

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON — Public Relations Officer Scott Wahl briefed Borough Council Jan. 14 on the forthcoming Comcast public access channel and Shared Services Agreement with Stone Harbor and Sea Isle City.
The channel will enable each town to provide instant information, even from remote locations, for emergency management situations, education purposes, civic and community organizations, traffic and weather, including live radar and tide updates that Wahl said would “rival the Weather Channel.”
Also, he said there are plans for a Garden State Parkway traffic camera.
Each town’s Web site will simulcast the channel’s programming, which will be divided into two ten-minute spots each per hour and share the cost of the channel with an initial payment of $2,000 for set-up then $200 per month thereafter for a three-year period.
Wahl said April 1 is the goal date to begin broadcast and the borough received a $40,000 grant from Comcast.
Local businesses could sponsor portions of programming, but under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations businesses cannot call consumers to action.
Equipment for the channel will be housed at Avalon Free Public Library History Center.
Stone Harbor recently passed a resolution awarding a contract to Televue, which will supply equipment and upgrades as plans to broadcast live are realized. Wahl said video programming could begin in late summer or early fall.
