By Press Release

The Stone Harbor Property Owners Association (SHPOA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Lenore Tedesco, Executive Director of the Wetlands Institute has been selected as this year’s Citizen of the Year.
At its fall general membership meeting on Saturday, Sept. 12, SHPOA President Jeff Alderton provided the following comments:
Dr. Tedesco hails from Long Island and has made home in many parts of the country due to her craft and expertise. She writes for 7 Mile Times and Cape May Magazine, where they focus on many areas of natural resources and environmental conservation. She is an avid orchid grower and an overall gardener, as well as an avid bird watcher, biker and a semi-pro photographer.
Dr. Tedesco is an absolutely dedicated professional in the areas of Marine Geology and Geophysics. Her credentials are astounding, both professionally and personally. Her schooling is beyond reproach. She is a researcher, a teacher, an organizer, a leader and a woman who has made a significant impact on Stone Harbor, our surrounding communities and quite frankly, the world at large. Her skills and abilities have strengthened one of our true treasures in town – the Bird Sanctuary. She takes enormous pride in preserving, protecting and restoring natural resources, which is evidenced by all the work she has done on Stone Harbor Point, from 122nd Street into the dune section clear to the bridge. She is known for making a difference, she treads lightly to get things accomplished, she imparts wisdom to colleagues and students alike, motivating them to constantly do better, and she makes no small plans.
Tedesco was named the Executive Director of the Wetlands Institute in October 2011, and since her arrival has worked to showcase the value and benefit of the area’s natural resources. She has worked on restoration projects at Stone Harbor Point, in the marshes behind Stone Harbor and at the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. “I am thrilled to have my work recognized and valued by the citizens of Stone Harbor,” said Tedesco.
The Wetlands Institute has a mission of preserving and protecting wetlands and coastal ecosystems through programs in research, conservation and education.
