STONE HARBOR — A welcome addition to 96th Street, the borough now flies a “Blue Wave” flag in recognition of meeting 33 criteria to secure certification by the national Clean Beaches Council (CMC) as a Blue Wave Beach.
Stone Harbor is the only beach in New Jersey to receive this recognition.
The CMC is a non-profit organization “devoted to sustaining America’s beaches,” according to information at Web site: www.cleanbeaches.org. The Council was launched in the spring of 1998, the United Nation’s “International Year of the Ocean,” and works to bring about, “coastal management and protection of human health and the environment.”
The campaign is modeled after the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe, which awards the “Blue Flag Award” and the Tidy Britain Group, which designates a similar “Seaside Award.” Twenty countries participate in the organizations worldwide.
The Blue Wave Campaign program is the country’s first environmental certification program for beaches.
Blue Wave beaches voluntarily pledge to uphold responsible beach management practice including water quality beach and intertidal conditions, safety, services, habitat conservation, public information and education, and erosion management.
While most beach communities do not regularly monitor water quality, Stone Harbor has made a commitment to do so in accepting this designation.
“Those who live and play in Stone Harbor know our beach is second to none, and we are proud to be recognized with this honor and to fly the Blue Wave flag,” said Mayor Suzanne Walters.
