Springer’s Freedom Ice Cream Helps Troops

By Herald Staff

STONE HARBOR – The “Freedom Fighter” flavor still thrives in its second year on the Feature Flavor board at Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream in Stone Harbor.
Last August, Springer’s challenged members of the media to create a new, unique ice cream flavor. Rob Seitzinger stepped up to the challenge and, with the help of his two children, developed “Freedom Fighter”-a red, white and blue sweet treat featuring Jersey Fresh fruit.
But Seitzinger had a challenge of his own for Springer’s: to donate the sales of the flavor towards care packages for the men and women of our military.
Being of a military family, Mary Goldenthal of Springer’s happily accepted.
After a successful run through the end of the summer season, “Freedom Fighter” funds were donated in their entirety to Sponsor The Troops, Inc., an organization dedicated to improving the morale of our troops one card, letter or package at a time.
Sponsor The Troops volunteer Jackie Baldwin and Springer’s Goldenthal partnered to purchase care package items that met the requests of troops serving abroad, preparing over 20 packages that were sent overseas last September.
Inspired by the response, the Springer’s team has decided to continue the flavor for the 2009 season, with the hope of garnering the same level of support and result.
Stop by Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream at 9420 Third Avenue in Stone Harbor for a taste of “Freedom Fighter.”
