DENNISVILLE — Cape May Seashore Lines is closing Dennisville-Petersburg Road (County Road No. 610) in the Dennisville section of Dennis Township this week to rehabilitate the at-grade railroad crossing.
The existing railroad crossing is in very poor condition and motorists currently must slow down to safely cross the railroad tracks. The road is expected to re-open by 5 p.m. on April 16, 2009.
The detour route for eastbound passenger vehicles is Dennisville-Petersburg Road to Fidler Road (CR 638) to Fidler Hill Road (CR660) to Woodbine-Ocean View Road (CR550) back to Dennisville-Petersburg Road. For westbound passenger vehicles the detour is reversed. The eastbound truck detour will use Delsea Drive (NJ Route 47) to Tyler Road (CR611) to Washington Avenue (CR557) to Dehirsch Avenue/Woodbine-Ocean View Road (CR550). The westbound truck detour is reversed. Orange construction signs will be posted indicating both detour routes.
The existing timber and asphalt railroad crossing will be removed and new concrete rail crossing will be installed. A very short stretch of the approaches on either side of the railroad crossing are scheduled to be resurfaced. This work was coordinated to be performed at the time that the Dennis Township schools are closed for spring break, thus avoiding any delays to school buses as the result detouring around the work site.
Funding for the railroad grade rehabilitation comes to Cape May Seashore Lines through the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Since the railroad crossing is on a county road, the Cape May County Public Works Department is assisting by posting detour signs for the detour routes.
