Oasis Café Rises to the Culinary Occasion

By Herald Staff

NORTH WILDWOOS – Oasis Cafe offers one of the best views on the island, whether on a deck overlooking beach and ocean or inside the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club. But the real treat is the menu, one that goes beyond the burgers, cheese steaks and pizza so prevalent on the boardwalk.

Try coconut shrimp with citrus dipping sauce, salads with grilled chicken or fresh seafood, crab cake sandwiches and wraps, or the popular Oasis sandwich – with grilled chicken, bacon, smoked gouda and honey mustard on a toasty ciabatta.

Liquid refreshments have taken on a new look as well, with a new menu and tropical drinks, the kind you’d expect in the Caribbean.

This summer, Morey’s Piers has elevated the cafe’s importance. Credit the hiring of executive chef, Wally Jurusz. And credit the quest for new culinary avenues as well.

“Our philosophy has always been to make and serve the best possible food, period. The addition of Wally Jurusz to the food and beverage team has proved to be a great resource in that effort. His advanced culinary background and passion for the art of creating better food and a better experience is an inspiration to us all,” says Betsy Garr, Ocean Oasis Food and Beverage Area Manager.

Jurusz says the new emphasis is one of the high points of the summer’s dining experience.  “The Food and Beverage Department gets to spread its wings at the café.”

Morey’s expanded the kitchen to accommodate high volume wrap and salad production, and also for efficiency in catering operations, Garr says. New avenues include healthier additions such as Mediterranean shrimp wrap, filet tip wrap, arugula salad and buffalo chicken salad.

“Hummus has been a big hit,” Garr says. “We’re also trying more specials this year, trying to get a feel for what the consumer is after.”

Guests can choose from a variety of specials, changing daily but including items like: Caprese salad, Greek couscous salad, panzanella salad and bleu cheese, and balsamic glazed onion burger.

A new crab cake, Caribbean sorbet and Chef Wally’s Cuban fries add to the innovations. Cuban fries are house fries tossed in Chef Wally’s Cuban spice served with cilantro cream sauce. The Cuban seasoning is one of Wally’s many spices from his H A Spice Co ®.

And yes, the menu still includes the Cheeseburger in Paradise, with fries and a palm tree. All for $1,000. No takers yet.

Oasis Café is open everyday through September 8, 2009. After September 8th, please call 609-522-3900 for our operating hours
