OCEAN CITY — Cape May County Realtor John McCann issued the following statement today in response to the proposed legislation by the NJ Senate abolishing the Council on Affordable Housing.
“I am pleased that Senator Lesniak is sounding the death knell for this failed and experimental housing scheme.” said McCann. “I also agree with Senator Beck that this is a good first step.” McCann continued.
McCann referred to the Council on Affordable Housing as “well intentioned at best” and “destructive to local communities at worst.”
“Our local elected officials were forced to comply with ever changing regulations regardless of their cost or feasibility.” McCann continued. “Clearly no one in Trenton was listening to the people who were bearing the financial burden.”
“Unfortunately, the financial impact of these regulations on property taxpayers currently is money lost and wasted.” said McCann.
McCann, who is a small business owner, past president of the Cape May County Board of Realtors and a 2009 candidate for the NJ Legislature continued, “When government regulations becomes over reaching like that, the small business community struggles to adjust and the economy destabilizes.”
“It is these kinds of policies that have been driving property taxes higher and higher and driving people further and further from our State,” said McCann. “I congratulate our senators to the north, one Republican and one Democrat, for their courage to recognize that when government is broken it is time to step up and fix it,” McCann continued.
“I firmly believe that without the election of Governor Chris Christie, no one would have had the political will to change this.” “Christie’s strong leadership and willingness to take on the difficult issues facing New Jersey is refreshing and inspirational,” concluded McCann.
