Main Street Wildwood Donates to Aid Food Drive

By Herald Staff

WILDWOOD — Main Street Wildwood, a non-profit downtown revitalization organization, has donated $350 to cover the cost of paper necessary for the annual Cape May County food drive. The effort is conducted by U.S. Postal Service carriers,
in cooperation with Rural Route Carriers. postal carriers have distributed over 25,000 fliers publicizing the food drive to addresses throughout Cape May County. Non-perishable food will be collected on Saturday, Dec. 6 and distributed to local food banks.
The food drive has been an annual event for more than 15 years. Food collected in each community is distrib-uted within each community through its local food bank. The food drive is a true team effort, with postal work-ers volunteering their time to bring food donations to local food banks and the Boy Scouts helping to sort the food items.
The effort is countywide with a strong core of volunteers from the Wildwoods. Oceanside Realty has donated the use of its trucks to help distribute the food, with the assistance of Paxton Construction and Develop-ment. The City of Wildwood assisted in the preparation of the food drive fliers. Postal customers can leave non-perishable food donations at their mailboxes or drop them off at their local post office.
Food banks throughout the area have been facing shortages. With the downturn in the economy and rising un-employment squeezing incomes, the food budget for many families has been slashed. Demand at food banks has been rising and corporate and other donations have been declining. This annual food drive provides a much-needed safety net for many Cape May County families.
Main Street Wildwood is a 501(c)3 non profit organization whose mission is to encourage and support the eco-nomic redevelopment of the Wildwoods’ traditional downtown commercial district. Main Street Wildwood ac-tively supports events and initiatives that strengthen the community. A healthier, more vibrant community will make downtown Wildwood a more attractive place to work, shop, entertain and live.
