RIO GRANDE — Stylist Kristin Bongard concentrates on Sue Causey’s hairstyle; Marge Poehler carefully trims Claire Marks’ hair.
There’s chatter and the hum of blow dryers.
All is back to normal at Kathy’s Hairport and proprietor Kathy Janicki is thankful for that.
Kathy’s Hairport is bustling with business today, Nov. 12, as it celebrates its grand re-opening to celebrate a successful recovery after a car crashed through the front and into the salon.
Jennifer Velardi, a stylist who has worked at the salon for 15 years, was hit by the car and pushed to the back of the room. She suffered a broken nose and required knee surgery.
Velardi said she is doing well now and happy to be back.
Velardi said the salon has finally recovered and got some new equipment. She said the salon used salvaged supplies, following the accident, but is now stocked and in full swing.
The salon is providing giveaways, free lip gloss and jewelry, to its customers as a thank you for their loyal support. The salon has also provided a table of treats including sausage, hotdogs, donuts and coffee.
“We want to thank our customers for their patience during all these transitions,” Janicki told the Herald. “Thank God for getting us through all this and for having our health back.”
Janicki opened her first salon from her home 28 years ago. She has been at the current location, 1127 South Route 47, for 13 years.
“I don’t plan on retiring anytime soon,” Janicki told the Herald. “I love my work and the customers and staff. We’re like a family here.”
The grand re-opening continues until 4 p.m. today, Nov. 12.
