Jersey’s 16th in Foreclosure Filings

By Joe Hart

IRVINE, Calif. — According to a report from an online foreclosure company, one in every 265 New Jersey households filed a foreclosure notice in the first quarter of this year.
California-based RealtyTrac Inc. released a report April 29 that listed 13,104 properties in the state in various stages of foreclosure – default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions.
New Jersey was the 16th ranked state in rate of foreclosure notice per household. Nevada finished first with one in every 54 households receiving a foreclosure notice.
According to the report, the number of notices to New Jersey properties is up 34.32 percent over the previous quarter and 66 percent over this time last year.
Nationwide, the report found nearly 650,000 properties with filings, a 23 percent over the fourth quarter of 2007 and 112 percent over the first quarter of 2007. One in every 194 U.S. households received a foreclosure notice in the first quarter of 2008.
“Foreclosure activity in the first quarter increased on a year-over-year basis in 46 out of the 50 states and in 90 of the nation’s 100 largest metro areas, demonstrating that most regions of the country are seeing more foreclosures,” said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac.
Locally, a search of the RealtyTrac Web site on April 29 found 1604 listings in Cape May County in five categories:
Pre-Foreclosures, 488; Auction, 45; Bank Owned, 162; For Sale By Owner, 42; and Resale Homes, 867.
