NEW YORK – Gov. Jon S. Corzine was joined by government and business representatives christened the maiden voyage of the Atlantic City Express Service (ACES), the region’s only direct train between New York and Atlantic City and an enterprise that is expected to be an economic boon to the South Jersey tourism industry.
“As residents of the region seek vacation opportunities and diversions during these trying economic times, we must do what we can to promote tourism closer to home,” said Corzine in a release. “Offering travelers efficiency, convenience, and the ability to travel in an environmentally-friendly manner certainly puts out the ‘welcome’ sign for all of New Jersey.”
The ACES train is operated by NJ TRANSIT and provides direct service between New York City and Atlantic City. ACES is a joint venture between Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City and Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa.
ACES covers the cost of operating the train, which comes at no cost to taxpayers. NJ TRANSIT serves solely as operator of the rail service, providing locomotives, train engineers and crew. ACES assumes all other responsibilities and obligations in running the service, including setting the fares, marketing, and contracting with Amtrak for the use of its reservation service. ACES will be paying NJ TRANSIT a monthly amount based on an annual cost of $4.29 million.
“This is an excellent example of how a public-private partnership can work to the benefit of all concerned,” Corzine said. “This is a multiple win situation for everyone.”
