The Wildwood Historical Society/George F. Boyer Museum is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The museum was founded by George Boyer, a local fireman who had a fascination with antique artifacts. In 1963, the new municipal building allowed him to move all of his artifacts to a second floor room where they stayed until 1990. At that time, the property at 3907 Pacific Avenue became available. Through the efforts of firemen and fire trucks and many dedicated volunteers who formed a human chain from City Hall to the current location, the move was made.
In addition to the anniversary celebration, the museum will be holding their annual Postcard and Collectibles Show and Open House at the Pacific Avenue location on June 15, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There will be vendors on hand to buy, sell and trade. A program will be scheduled for 12 noon and there will be featured guests that include Mayor Ernie Troiano and the daughter of the founder of the museum, Kathy Boyer Maher.
If you enjoy Wildwood history you might come upon a very old postcard which features the “Strand Hotel”. The hotel today is the Dragon House at Lincoln and Pacific Avenue. If you are familiar with The Starlight Ballroom you can see that it used to be called “Hunts Auditorium.” During your visit, you can also see the uniform that the ushers wore when working at Hunt’s Theaters. While admission is free, donations are welcomed. Refreshments will be served.
