All who appreciate the benefits of Boy Scouts of America programs are invited to support Scouting in Cape May County at the 12th Annual Distinguished Citizens Reception which will be held on Monday, Oct. 23 at the Wildwoods Convention Center, 4501 Boardwalk, Wildwood. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception followed by dinner and awards presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Three leading Scout supporters have been selected as the 2017 Distinguished Citizens to be honored. Jay A. Gillian, Ocean City and John Scarpa, Avalon are this year’s honorees for the Distinguished Citizens of the Year Award for the Cape May County section of BaySea District of the Garden State Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Each year, the “Good Scout” Statue is presented to community leaders who exemplify the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America as expressed in the Scout Law and Oath. Jay A. Gillian and John Scarpa have been selected as this year’s honorees for outstanding service to the community as evidenced by the dedication, interest and leadership they have provided to many worthwhile organizations, and the respect and esteem in which they are regarded by their family, friends, colleagues and neighbors throughout Cape May County.

Honoroee Jay Gillian said, “I want to thank all the local Boy Scouts and their leaders for this honor and for their important work in shaping a new generation of young citizens with values, work ethic and community spirit.”

From Avalon, Honoree John Scarpa said, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. It is an honor to be recognized, I would like to thank the Boy Scouts as they help today’s youth become our future leaders.”
