CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — The Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently extended Honorary Membership to the Uniform Distribution Center in Woodbine, NJ. The Uniform Distribution Center provides all uniforms and accessories including service medals to every Coast Guard base and personnel in the United States and on foreign soil. Additionally, the UDC serves some 80,000 USCG active duty and auxiliary members as well as commissioned officers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the federal Public Health Service.
According to Lt. Bryan Weber, Manager of the Uniform Distribution Center, prior to the late 80s, the Coast Guard’s uniforms were maintained around the country via local unit clothing lockers. In 1988, the Coast Guard consolidated these clothing lockers into a single Uniform Distribution Center (UDC) at Training Center Cape May, saving the Coast Guard incredible time, space and money. In 1997, the UDC moved to its current facility in Woodbine, NJ. Today, from this location, the UDC contracts, receives, inspects, sells and ships approximately 50K orders worth $13M per year. The four warehouses house approximately 663K uniform pieces used to supply uniforms to over 120K personnel of the US Coast Guard, Public Health Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. UDC sales are completed via an online web store, over the counter cash sales, phone and fax.
All of these services are provided by a small but mighty workforce of 27 civilian employees and two active duty personnel. Five of these employees are used to staff the UDC’s recruit issue location in Cape May where we outfit approximately 3,000 CG recruits per year. The incredible work accomplished at the UDC is a credit to its employees, our leadership and local community support.
“We are very proud to welcome the Uniform Distribution Center as a member of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce,” reported Vicki Clark, President of the Chamber. “Having the Coast Guard’s Uniform Distribution Center located in Cape May County is a valued asset to the County, and the Chamber appreciates the importance of the UDC and its employees to the United States Coast Guard, NOAA and Public Health Service. Having the UDC located in Cape May County is one of the many reasons that Cape May County has been designated a Coast Guard Community.”
