EWING – Gov. Jon S. Corzine Thursday, March 5 announced an initiative that will save taxpayers more than $12 million through the consolidation of warehouse and office space used by state agencies.
“We are conducting a thorough review, department by department, to make the most of the state’s financial resources,” said Corzine in a release. “Just as every New Jersey family must economize during this time of national financial crisis, the state must achieve cost savings in every way possible. This is a perfect example of how, through consolidation and sharing of resources, those savings can be achieved.”
During a visit to a leased warehouse in Ewing today, Governor Corzine noted an estimated $12.6 million in savings will result over the next several years, including $3.2 million in Fiscal Year 2009 and another $8.3 million in Fiscal Year 2010. The savings will be realized as the state terminates and renegotiates leases to reduce warehouse and office space from 6.6 million to 5.4 million square feet.
The move from the leased warehouse space in Ewing will save the state $119,000 for the balance of the current fiscal year and $470,000 a year, beginning in FY 10.
The Ewing facility is currently occupied by the Department of Corrections and the State Museum, and will be empty when the lease expires at the end of March. At that time, the agencies will relocate staff and storage items to state-owned warehouses. The move is one of multiple efforts throughout the Corzine Administration, with a focus on assembling cross-agency teams working to find efficiencies through shared government operations. The efforts are achieving $25 million in total savings to the FY 09 budget.
In accompanying the Governor today, State Treasurer David Rousseau added that state space needs have been reduced in recent years.
“There are 7,000 fewer employees in state agencies, departments, and authorities than when the Governor took office, which has reduced the state’s needs for office space. And with more and more government services and documents now available on-line, this administration has dramatically lessened the need to order and store paper supplies,” Rousseau said.
