SUNSET BEACH – If you watch the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric on July Fourth, you will see a report on the tradition of the flag ceremony honoring veterans held at sunset here during the summer months.
CBS Correspondent Jim Axelrod and crew interviewed Marvin Hume, an 89 year old World War II veteran, who has hosted the event for 40 years on Mon., June 28.
All of the flags flown are veterans’ casket flags that have been donated by the families. The ceremony includes the Pledge of Allegiance, the “Star Spangled Banner” and a recording of Kate Smith’s “God Bless America.”
The CBS crew interviewed Hume at his home earlier in the day. Hume arrived at the flag lowering ceremony wearing a crisp white shirt and a wireless microphone for the news camera.
The flag being flown was the casket flag of George McKenna, a World War II navy veteran who fought at the invasion of Normandy in 1945. His family was present including his widow, Betty.
The CBS cameraman captured the family’s reaction as the flag was lowered and carefully folded by Hume and two assistants.
Axelrod also taped a segment on the beach before sunset. According to CBS, Axelrod, a national correspondent for CBS News, previously served as chief White House correspondent.
He has covered Campaign ’04 and the Iraq War as an embedded reporter.
Axelrod moved to the CBS News bureau in New York in 1999, having been assigned to the bureaus in Dallas (1997-99) and Miami (1996-97) before that. He regularly reports for the CBS Evening News and other CBS News broadcasts.
