BPU Lists Hearings on Effects of CATV Franchise

NEWARK – The state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has announced a series of three public hearings through-out the state to assess the effects of the system-wide franchise on the New Jersey cable television market.
Pursuant to state law, the BPU is required to convene proceedings within 36 months after the entry of the sys-tem-wide franchisees to examine the effects on New Jersey’s cable television market and report back to the leg-islature within six months of the proceedings.
Verizon of New Jersey, Inc., was granted the first system-wide franchise on Dec.18, 2006.
The BPU is therefore required to start hearings by Dec. 19, 2009, and a report will be due to the Governor, Sen-ate and General Assembly no later than June 2, 2010.
Closest of the three hearings to Cape May County will be held Dec. 8, at 4 p.m. at Cherry Hill Municipal Build-ing 820 Mercer St., Cherry Hill.
Public comment period will be open from December 8, 2009, through Jan. 22, 2010. Written comments may be submitted to Celeste M. Fasone, Director, Office of Cable Television, 2 Gateway Center, Eighth Floor, Newark, NJ 07102.
