Blue skies, warm weather and a golf course in perfect condition welcomed 135 golfers at the Avalon Golf Club on Sunday morning, June 26 for the 8th Annual Avalon Lions Charities Foundation Charity Golf Classic.
Before teeing off, the golfers enjoyed a barbecue lunch and did a little “shopping,” placing bids on dozens of silent auction items and raffle gifts that included sports souvenirs, jewelry and gift certificates to spas, restaurants and Atlantic City and local hotels.
The proceeds of the day go to help support the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children. Last year the tournament raised $40,000, and this year the Lions were confident they could beat that number. Avalon Lions President Jim Lutz said, “Thanks to dozens of generous donors and attendees who carded great golf scores and engaged in enthusiastic and competitive bidding, the tournament remains our largest and most successful fundraiser.”
This year the dinner was followed by a live auction hosted by retired CBS3 Eyewitness News personalities, long time anchor Pat Ciarrocchi and reporter Robin Mackintosh.
The live auction included a basketball signed by NCAA Men’s Championship coach Jay Wright and the entire team. CBS3 donated not one, but two tours of its broadcast facility in Philadelphia to the two highest bidders. The tours are personally conducted by Pat Ciarrocchi and Robin Mackintosh.
The Avalon Lions Club is the largest Lions organization in New Jersey with over 150 members.
Summer is the busiest time of year for Lions fundraising as they look forward to the B-STREET concert at Avalon Community Hall on July 23 and the annual Pasta Night set for October 16.
The Avalon Lions Club supports more than a dozen charities in Cape May County including CARA, CASA, Habitat for Humanity, Lazarus House, Holy Redeemer Food Bank and Toys for Tots.
