AMI Honored As NJ BIZ Healthcare Hero

Atlantic Medical Imaging (AMI) has been named as a Finalist in the 2015 NJ BIZ Healthcare Heroes awards program. AMI was recognized in the Women’s Health and Wellness Hero category for their exceptional commitment and contribution to women’s health through their Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van.

In April of 2014, AMI assumed operations of the Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van. The van offers life-saving screening mammograms to women throughout southern and central New Jersey.
The mobile digital mammography van is one of only a handful of mobile mammography vans in the country, and only one of two in New Jersey. The AMI Foundation Screening Mammography Program promotes the importance of early detection of cancer by removing barriers and increasing access to annual mammography screening.
In the first year of operation by AMI, 660 women were screened on the Mobile Digital Mammography Van during 176 site visits. Three hundred and two of those screenings (54%) were done free of charge to uninsured women. One hundred and five of those women (16%) had never been screened before and 198 (30%) had not been screened in two or more years.
The mammography van continues to offer easily accessible screening mammograms to women in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, Monmouth, Camden and Salem counties. Within 30 minutes, a woman can have a screening mammogram at a location close to their home or workplace, regardless of their ability to pay.
AMI also partners with businesses, community organizations and civic groups to raise awareness of breast cancer and the critical role that screening mammograms play in helping to prevent and treat the disease at an early stage when it is most likely to be successfully treated.
AMI also continues to fulfill many requests from employers who promote health and wellness for their employees and enable them to have a screening mammogram during their scheduled work day. With their busy schedules, trying to balance their work and personal responsibilities, many of these women may not have had their screening mammogram if the van had not been at their work locations.
The van is funded through a grant from the Susan G. Komen, as well as funding from the RNS Cancer and Heart Fund, the Greate Bay Women’s Golf Association and the AMI Foundation.
The Healthcare Heroes awards program honors individuals and organizations making a significant impact on the quality of healthcare in New Jersey. Finalists were selected in 10 categories: Education Hero-Individual, Education Hero-Organization, Healthcare Professional of the Year, Hospital of the Year, Innovation Hero, Nurse of the Year, Physician of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Women’s Health and Wellness Hero, and Workplace Wellness Hero.
Finalists and winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges and were recognized during an awards ceremony on June 23, 2015 at the Palace in Somerset Park in Somerset, New Jersey..
