Mike Benson and Joe Johnson, whose roots in Woodbine are both long and dedicated, are honored to seek re-election to Woodbine Council on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Mike and Joe bring a combination of mature, intelligent leadership, experience and accomplishment that will drive their efforts to keep Woodbine moving forward. Mike and Joe are very aware of the impact the recession had and continues to have on small towns such as Woodbine. They’ve seen too many unoccupied, vacant and abandoned homes that resulted from that nationwide economic decline. They believe in continuing and building upon the progress being made in attracting new families to Woodbine and maintaining established families. To that end, they will work to: revitalize recreational opportunities for the town’s youth; keep the Local Purpose Tax low and maintain a posture that is receptive to business; maintain the Airport Business Park as a viable locale for small businesses; pursue a partnership with Cape May County and the Woodbine Developmental Center for extension of sewer service into downtown Woodbine; work together with the Woodbine Elementary School to establish and maintain the spirit of excellence and academic achievement that is critical for attracting young families and giving our children the foundation for successful, rewarding lives; and finally, but not least, keeping Woodbine looking good, with fine streetscapes and sidewalks, and keeping our small town charm.
Mike, born and raised in Woodbine, has been serving his third term on Woodbine Council, having previously served as Woodbine’s Borough Attorney and Prosecutor from 1991 to 2007. He is married to Margaret, who recently retired as the 6th-8th grade math teacher at Woodbine Elementary. Mike is a member of the Woodbine Planning/Zoning Board, served on the Woodbine Airport Authority, is on the Woodbine Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Directors of the Sam Azeez Museum Foundation, and was a past president of the Woodbine Brotherhood Synagogue.
Joe is seeking his second term on council, is a graduate of Millville Senior High School, and is married to lifelong resident Wanda (formerly Wanda Elsey) who retired from the Woodbine Developmental Center. Joe has resided in Woodbine for over 30 years and is employed with the Cape May County Municipal Utility Authority, having had many years in managerial experience with the Tropicana Casino, Johnson Trash Removal Service and Career Opportunity Development, Inc. He served on the Woodbine Planning/Zoning Board and is a member of Christ Gospel Church in Whitesboro.
