CLERMONT – Several members of Belleplain Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6257 recently visited Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School to mark Catholic Schools Week.
According to a release, the veterans took part and briefly discussed their service time. After that, they answered the students’ questions. Those pupils were from kindergarten through eighth grade.
After a question-and-answer session, seventh and eighth-grade students and the American heroes participated in a flag lowering ceremony.
English teacher Debra Laricks, who planned and led the event, kept the younger students engaged with patriotic trivia.
The older students lowered the flag with the veterans.
Once lowered, the flag was brought back inside the gym where all student were given a demonstration and instruction on what the flag symbolizes. They also learned how to properly fold and store Old Glory.
Participating membesr of the post included Vietnam War veteran Spyros Spyropoulos, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Ed Camp, Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans Trevor Jenni, Jonathan Hinker, who is also the post commander.
