AVALON — The Borough of Avalon recognized residents in the community who have volunteered their time and services to enrich the lives of seniors at the Avalon Senior Center on Thurs., Nov. 10. The Borough also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Senior Center which was dedicated to Jeannette Glazier upon her retirement 20 years ago.
“The volunteers who graciously donate their time and abilities to the Avalon Senior Center are truly the fabric of our community”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “We deeply appreciate their dedication and invite seniors to participate in the many activities at the Center throughout the year”.
Special presentations were made by Avalon Council President Dr. Nancy Hudanich to the volunteers who were invited to a luncheon in their honor. Theresa Montgomery has taught bridge at the Center for 15 years. Barbara Blake taught Mah Jongg classes throughout the summer, while Joan Fitzgerald teaches Spite ‘N Malice, Pinochle and Canasta. Cass Quinn recently retired from teaching piano at the Center.
In Nov., 1991, the Avalon Senior Center was dedicated by Mayor Pagliughi and Borough Council in Avalon. The Borough utilized a grant totaling $177,610 to construct the center in one section of a former fire station. The renovations took six months to complete. Jeannette Glazier was appointed coordinator of the Avalon Senior Center. Since 2003, the Center has also offered Spanish lessons, monthly cooking lessons, bingo, and other activities. The Center is also used by many community organizations, including the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association which holds its monthly meetings there. The Center is currently directed by Susan Keen and maintained by the Avalon Department of Public Works.
