Avalon Police Department to Participate in Annual ‘Click It or Ticket’ Campaign

Click It or Ticket 2016

By Press Release

AVALON — The Avalon Police Department will participate in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign this spring. The effort to strictly enforce seat belt usage will occur May 23-June 5, 2016 and includes the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend.
“The Avalon Police Department participates in this annual effort to provide a reminder that not only is seat belt usage the law, but it saves lives,” Chief McCormick said. “This will be the only statewide seat belt enforcement crackdown in New Jersey this year.”
“Click it or Ticket” is an effort by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General. The Avalon Police Department will track and report the seat belt and related summonses that are issued by the Department and report it to the necessary agencies.
“Click It or Ticket” is a high-publicity law enforcement effort that gives people more of a reason to buckle up—the increased threat of a traffic ticket. Most drivers and passengers buckle up for safety; but for some individuals, it is the threat of a ticket that spurs them to put on a safety belt. “Click It or Ticket” participants are asked to mobilize and focus on safety belt violations, and publicize the stepped up effort for the benefit of the community.
These campaigns and similar efforts have had a positive impact on seat belt usage in New Jersey. In 2015, 372 law enforcement agencies participated in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign and improved the State’s seat belt usage from 87.59% in 2014 to 91.36% in 2015.
New Jersey’s seat belt laws require all drivers and passengers in both the front and back seats to use seat belts. A violation remains a primary offense for all front seat drivers and passengers, meaning a ticket may be issued only for not wearing a seat belt.
