Matt Milam brings an experienced sense of local business to politics.
Matt was chairman and CEO of his family’s trucking company, Foundry Service Corporation and Miles & Co., Inc. from 1979 to 2016. He has served on boards for local non-profit agencies. In 2007 he was serving on the board of the Vineland YMCA, and they had a loan that they were having trouble paying off.
Matt reached out to then Sen. Jeff Van Drew. Matt and Jeff created a refinancing plan that saved the YMCA, and saved about a half-million dollars.
Always seeking people with integrity and honesty, Van Drew asked Matt if he would consider running for Assembly. Matt thought it would be a great opportunity to bring business sense to Trenton.
Some of his early accomplishments as an assemblyman include passing legislation that created the InvestNJ Business Grant Program, streamlining the process for business permits, establishing a free recreational saltwater fishing license, and passing legislation to allow municipalities to provide veterans with free or reduced-cost access to New Jersey beaches.
By 2013, juggling the assemblyman responsibilities, running the family business, and finding time to spend with his family was impossible. Matt stepped down from public office, but he found his true passion still laid with serving the community.
In 2016, he sold the family business and is excited to be back as an assemblyman. Matt’s dad was a Korean War veteran. He wants to honor his service by assisting returning veterans however he can.
Towards the end of his parent’s lives, there was a lot of healthcare bureaucracy. Together with his First Legislative District colleagues Bob Andrzejczak and Bruce Land, Matt is thrilled to be a part of new legislation that helps returning veterans and seniors.
A new property tax freeze helps seniors to retire with dignity and stay in their homes. New legislation assists returning veterans with job training and college scholarship opportunities. Matt was also named the 2019 NJ Assemblyman of The Year by the New Jersey American Veterans.
Matt has also fought for women’s rights, passing the strongest equal pay protections in the country and restoring funding for women’s healthcare services, such as preventative services, prenatal care, and cancer screenings.
With Matt’s roots as a local small businessman, he is all about helping our local industries grow. A lot of work has gone into passing legislation with Bob and Bruce to make it easier for small businesses to get investment capital, and make sure the small businesses and working-class of South Jersey have what they need to expand.
The three have accomplished a lot, but there is still more work to do, especially to make South Jersey more affordable.
