WILDWOOD CREST – A 20-year-old Clayton man was arrested for eluding police after he fled in his vehicle after officers attempted to stop him for reckless driving, police said.

According to a Police Department press release, a Wildwood Crest class II officer spotted a black Chevrolet Camaro being operated recklessly on Atlantic Avenue on Sunday, May 26, at around 12:40 p.m. Police said the driver, identified as Kadircan Akilli, was spinning his tires and driving at a high rate of speed.

When the officer activated his siren and lights to attempt a traffic stop, Akilli continued to the intersection of Cresse and Atlantic avenues before spinning his tires and turning in the direction of Ocean Avenue. Police pursued the Camaro until Akilli pulled into the Wildwoods Convention Center parking lot, where he was arrested.

He was charged with second-degree eluding. He is the second driver in about a week to be charged with second-degree eluding in the Wildwoods. The first driver attempted to elude police after committing a traffic violation, raising the violation to the level of a felony.

Akilli was also charged with careless driving, failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle, reckless driving, an improper turn at a traffic light and failure to stop and yield to an emergency vehicle.

According to the press release, Akilli had numerous contacts with police officers in Wildwood Crest and Wildwood over the Memorial Day weekend for various traffic offenses. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
