NORTH WILDWOOD – Police have charged a Cape May man with animal cruelty after he allegedly decapitated a seagull on the North Wildwood boardwalk on Saturday, July 6.

Police responded to 2501 Boardwalk near Morey’s Piers after witnesses reported that a man, identified as Franklin Zeigler, 29, had decapitated a seagull. Police said that during the investigation, Zeigler was irate and uncooperative with officers on an unrelated investigation, which resulted in his arrest for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, both disorderly persons offenses.

A follow-up investigation was also conducted by Detective Vincent Deritis, who is the Police Department’s humane law enforcement officer. Deritis’ investigation included statements by Zeigler on the scene as well as photographs and witness statements. As a result, Zeigler was charged with third-degree animal cruelty. He was given a summons and released pending a future court date.

The North Wildwood Police Department advises any member of the public who has information related to this case or any other criminal activities to contact the Detective Division at 609-522-2411. The public can also provide tips anonymously by using TEXT-A-TIP, by texting TIP NWPD followed by the message, to 888777.
