Cape May Point Hosts Second Annual Marine Science Symposium

Professors, presenters and student participants at the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center Marine Science Symposium.

From May 30 to June 1, the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center welcomed students, researchers, and environmental professionals from across the Mid-Atlantic for the second annual Marine Science Symposium—a three-day event focused on ocean health, coastal resilience, and collaborative research.

Set against the backdrop of Cape May’s unique coastal ecosystems, the symposium provided a platform for undergraduate and graduate students to present original research, connect with experts, and explore timely topics such as marine biodiversity, ocean conservation, and climate change impacts.

This year’s event featured keynote speakers, student poster sessions, and engaging panel discussions aimed at fostering dialogue and inspiring science-based solutions. With discounted registration for students, the symposium was designed to be both accessible and empowering for the next generation of marine scientists.

“The symposium inspired students to dive into marine science, hearing from professionals and peers alike. Many presented their research for the first time, and it was incredibly rewarding to witness their passion and curiosity. We can’t wait to host the event again next year on May 29–31, 2026!,” said Melissa Laurino, Marine Science Advisor.

The Center extends its deepest thanks to the sponsors, partners, and collaborators who made the event possible. Special appreciation goes to Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center, Cellular Tracking Technologies, Sea Turtle Recovery, Atlantic Cape Community College, and the American Littoral Society for their ongoing partnership and support.

The symposium builds on the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center’s growing calendar of science programming, including the recent “Sail for Science” expedition aboard the AJ Meerwald and the upcoming Climate Summit: Local Action, Global Impact happening June 20–22.

As the symposium came to a close, it reaffirmed Cape May’s vital role as a hub for marine research and environmental education in the Mid-Atlantic. The weekend even ended with a Humpback Whale sighting on the American Star!
