The Cape May Point Arts & Science Center writes a column in the Herald every week in the summer.
From June 20–22, the Cape May Point Arts and Science Center will welcome several hundred guests to its inaugural Climate Summit—this three-day sold out event is centered on the theme “Local Action, Global Impact,” a reminder that while climate change is a global challenge, the solutions often start at the local level. The Summit is bringing together over 20 expert speakers—leaders in science, technology, policy, conservation, and community organizing—for a weekend of collaboration, education, and action.
Free and open to the public, the event marks the official launch of the CMPASC Climate Institute, a new initiative dedicated to climate education, scientific research, and developing practical solutions for Cape Island and other vulnerable coastal regions.
The Summit kicks off Friday evening with a welcome reception. On Saturday, June 21, speakers will lead discussions on climate science and the very real and tangible impacts we’re already experiencing in our area, followed by a climate solutions showcase with presentations on innovative climate technology, smart policy, nature-based approaches to adaptation and resilience, and inspiring community- and coalition-led efforts. Among the featured voices are representatives from Rutgers University, NJ Governor’s Office, Rebuild by Design, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, The Nature Conservancy, NJ Environmental Justice Alliance, The Wetlands Institute, Third Act, and so many more.
On Sunday, Cape May’s wildlife and natural areas will take center stage. Attendees will join a dolphin and bird watching cruise with the Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center or explore the South Cape May Meadows Preserve with The Nature Conservancy, highlighting the importance of protecting local ecosystems already facing climate stress.
“As we launch the new Climate Institute, the Cape May Climate Summit is just the beginning. We’re building something lasting at CMPASC: A home for scientific research, climate education, and the development of solutions right here in Cape May. The energy and enthusiasm for the summit has made clear that our community is ready to move from awareness to action—and we’re here to support that shift with knowledge, data, innovation, and collaboration,” said Lara Croushore, Director of Climate at CMPASC.
The event will offer a broad overview of the kinds of work CMPASC envisions for the Climate Institute in the years ahead and underscore CMPASC’s commitment to becoming a hub for climate awareness and research, right here in Cape May Point.
