CAPE MAY – Deputy Fire Chief Michael Eck was named coordinator of the city’s Office of Emergency Management at the City Council meeting Tuesday, July 2.

Eck has served as the deputy OEM coordinator since June 2022. He has been deputy fire chief since January 2021.

Municipal OEM coordinators, according to the state Office of Emergency Management, are “responsible for planning, activating and coordinating the conduct of emergency management operations with the municipality.”

Eck is a graduate of Camden County College’s program in fire science technology and holds an associate’s degree from Atlantic Cape Community College in business administration.

In Cape May, the OEM position, which had been open, is appointed by the mayor. At the council meeting, when Mayor Zack Mullock announced Eck’s appointment, he praised Eck for the job he has already done as one of the city’s top public safety and emergency management leaders. He thanked Eck for his willingness to serve in the additional role.
