MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – The anticipated opening date for INSA Middle Township’s cannabis retail store at Route 9 and Avalon Boulevard has been moved back once again.
At the Township Committee’s meeting Oct. 21, Deputy Business Administrator Suzanne Schumann said the latest information from INSA is that the store is waiting for final license approval, which it hopes to obtain at the December meeting of the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Indoor work on the facility is largely complete, Schumann said, but exterior signage still needs to be put up.
The Planning Board approved the location for the cannabis store in January. The site was once a Wawa store and, most recently, was a dermatology treatment center.
Hopes for a spring opening pushed out to midsummer, then turned to late September, and now have a best opening date sometime after the Cannabis Regulatory Commission’s Dec. 12 meeting.
By ordinance the township has said it will allow up to two cannabis retail shops in the municipality. Mayor Chris Leusner has said that the township will not support a second cannabis operation until after it has had time to observe the impact of the INSA store.
