AVALON – The borough has opened bids for the Bay Park Marina project, finding the low bid was 18% below the town’s engineering estimate. The bid came from Fred M. Schiavone Construction of Malaga, the firm responsible for the construction of Surfside Park, a popular destination in the borough.
Borough Engineer Thomas Thornton said the engineer’s estimate for the project was $10.5 million, and the Schiavone bid was $8.6 million. One other bid was received, for an amount higher than the engineer’s estimate.
The long-awaited project was delayed first by the pandemic and then by the permitting processes.
Plans for the marina include a new bulkhead and boat launch ramp, Americans With Disabilities Act improvements, added boat slips and an updated marina building and restroom. The project also will see an increase in the elevation of the parking lot as an aid in flood mitigation.
Business Administrator Scott Wahl said the borough also remains committed to exploring funding for a living shoreline project to the south side of the boat ramp.
