AVALON – The borough council adopted an ordinance Wednesday, Oct. 25, restricting parking in the municipal lots that adjoin Borough Hall and the town’s school and library.

In July, Business Administrator Scott Wahl had addressed the council concerning an ongoing problem with the way the lots are utilized. The lots, Wahl said, are intended for use by those having business in Borough Hall or those accessing the library or school. Instead, during the season, he said, the lot is filled daily by many who have no intention of using any of the municipal buildings. With the support of the council, the administration prepared the ordinance change adopted Oct. 25.

The ordinance prohibits overnight parking from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. except by vehicles with special parking permits. The ordinance also creates two additional handicapped parking spaces and alters the penalties for unauthorized parking in the lots.

The ordinance structure suggests that officials believe that prohibiting parking prior to 8 a.m. will free up long-term parking in the lots and create spaces for those with municipal business.
