Drivers who use any of the five toll bridges in Cape May County and do not have E-ZPass might want to consider signing up and using the cashless toll system or possibly face significant penalties.
The Cape May County Bridge Commission is instituting a completely cashless toll system for its bridges, which connect the barrier islands, effective as of sometime in the first quarter of 2025; a date has not yet been set.
The one-direction tolls are now $2.50 for a standard vehicle. Drivers will be able to pay cash until the effective date for all-E-ZPass is set.
After the changeover, drivers without E-ZPass will have their license plate photographed and will receive a bill in the mail. Unpaid tolls can result in penalties, and tolls paid after 30 days are subject to a $50 fee. Unpaid tolls could result in suspension of a car’s registration.
Violators will receive a notice by mail with instructions to send in a payment. The cost, in addition to the toll, can include fees for processing, handling and mailing the toll bills. And according to ridester.com, not having E-ZPass might limit a driver’s ability to effectively dispute toll bills.
The five bridges under the Cape May County Bridge Commission are the Ocean City-Longport Bridge, Townsends Inlet Bridge, Corsons Inlet Bridge, Middle Thorofare Bridge and Grassy Sound Bridge.
