Airbnbs, E-bikes and Beach Trash

To the Editor:

To North Cape May and Lower Township residents: We live in a tourist place. If you’re not happy about all the people who come down to our beaches, then maybe it’s time to move up the road – or even out of the state.

Airbnbs have become a new way for people to make money and save their homes. Many homes have been damaged by renters or occupied by tenants who stop paying and are hard to evict, especially if they have children and drag the case through court. So, a lot of homeowners turned to Airbnbs, where there’s usually less damage and fewer problems.

Bike paths have been created – yes, for bikes. There are a lot more of them in the summer months, so please be very aware of your surroundings when driving. I also believe e-bikes should have license plates on the back and proper lighting for safety.

As far as beach tags go, I believe it’s time for change. Just take a look at the conditions after 10 a.m. – they’re filthy. We need to rake and clean the beaches regularly, not only for appearance but also because people leave so much trash behind. The garbage bins overflow, and cleanup is a big job that’s often overlooked.

But doing it would help keep our taxes down, something we all care about as they keep going up.

Anything we can do to reinvest in our overused community after 14 straight weeks is worth it, in my view. If you live here year-round, beach tag prices should go down – almost half the price. Buy them early, then focus on enjoying summer with your family.
