DENNISVILLE – Two firefighters were injured while battling a three-alarm fire at a Petersburg Road home Wednesday, Nov. 8.
At approximately 8:23 a.m., the Dennisville Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to the 400 block of Petersburg Road for a reported structure fire. Automatic aid was dispatched from Ocean View Fire, Belleplain Fire, Stone Harbor Fire (Ladder), and Avalon Fire (Rapid Intervention Team). Dennis Township Fire Chief Mike Jaworski arrived on location and reported a working fire in a 2.5-story house with attached garage and requested a second alarm. All occupants and pets were out of the house upon arrival.
The incident eventually rose to a third alarm, bringing firefighters from Woodbine, Seaville, Tuckahoe, Marmora, Court House, Goshen, Rio Grande, Sea Isle City, Heislerville, Leesburg and Green Creek, as well as Inspira EMS, Upper Township EMS and Middle Township Ambulance Corps.
The fire was placed under control in approximately 40 minutes, but crews remained on scene for several hours performing overhaul and dousing hot spots, allowing investigators from the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office to inspect the fire scene. The American Red Cross and Atlantic City Electric also responded to the site.
While there were no reported civilian injuries, two firefighters were injured on scene. One was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated and released. The other was treated on scene.
The incident is under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office and the New Jersey State Police Woodbine Station.
