William E. “Bill” Fitzgerald, a cherished father, decorated war hero, dedicated social worker, and active community member, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at the golden age of 99 in Cape May Court House, NJ. Born on September 27, 1926, in Syracuse, NY, to Edward D. and Dessa Fitzgerald (nee Fitzsimmons), Bill's journey was one marked by service, resilience, and immense kindness.
Bill proudly served his nation as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division, 187th Glider Infantry in the Philippines during World War II. His bravery continued as he flew to Okinawa, ensuring the compliance with the Potsdam Declaration upon Japan's surrender. He was a beacon of strength, safeguarding peace at prisoner of war camps and other critical facilities. Returning from the war transformed, Bill attended Syracuse University where he graduated with a degree in Business, laying the foundation for his post-military career.
In the years that followed, Bill's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a construction company in Tennessee. His journey then took him to Philadelphia, where for 23 years, he worked with dedication as a driver for Yellow Cab taxi. In 1970, Bill found a new home in Woodbine, NJ, where his multifaceted life continued to unfold.
At the resilient age of 61, Bill embraced the role of a social worker for Cape May County. His kindness and friendly nature made him a beloved figure among those he served, retiring just before turning 80. His steadfast presence remained a comfort to many, as he continued driving well into his 99th year, showcasing the remarkable vitality that defined his life.
His daughter, Mary Ellen Davis, recalls her father as a pillar of strength and generosity. Though preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Constance Fitzgerald, and his parents, Bill's legacy is carried on by Mary Ellen, as well as his cherished nieces and nephews, Susan Lach, Matthew and Robin Tabor, Richard Tabor, Rebecca Greeley, and Timothy and Happie Tabor.
