Cape May Tables Artificial Turf Ordinance

CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council chose not to introduce an ordinance Tuesday, Nov. 21, that would have established a prohibition on artificial turf throughout the city. Instead the council tabled the ordinance indefinitely and sent it to the Planning Board for further consideration and recommendations.

The ordinance draft grew out of the recent adoption of updated Historic Design Standards by the Historic Preservation Commission. In those new standards the commission said the use of synthetic grass or turf in visible yards is not appropriate for the National Historic Landmark city. What the now-tabled ordinance would have done is extend the prohibition of artificial turf throughout the city with no provision for exceptions.
