Cape May Seeks to Preserve Old Waterworks Building

Cape May Seeks to Preserve Old Waterworks Building

By Vince Conti

CAPE MAY – Cape May City’s plans for a new desalination plant for its water system do not include demolition of the century-old building that houses the current operation.

At a City Council meeting Tuesday, Oct. 3, Mayor Zack Mullock said the city and its Historic Preservation Commission will seek to incorporate the existing building on Canning House Lane into the design of a new plant.

“Maybe we can use the building for office space,” Mullock said.

Whatever its use in the new desalination complex, Mullock said the city would be looking for a design concept that preserves and repurposes the historic building dating to 1926.
