Sutherland Tapped For Co. Prosecutor

TRENTON – Attorney Jeffrey H. Sutherland, Cape May County Democratic chairman, was nominated Nov. 30 to be Cape May County Prosecutor by Gov. Chris Christie. 
Sutherland, of Ocean City, has law offices in South Seaville and Linwood.
Sutherland must get the approval of the state Senate, in particular, Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st).
The county prosecutor’s term is five years. The post is the highest appointed law enforcement position in the county. The sheriff is the highest elected law enforcement post in the county.
Robert Taylor retired from the position Oct. 1, on reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70, after holding the job for 13 years, from Oct. 1, 2004. 
Acting Prosecutor Robert Johnson presently holds the position. Freeholders approved his salary effective Oct. 1 at $165,000 annually.
The County Prosecutor’s Department has 89 employees including the prosecutor, according to the county’s 2017 payroll.
