To the Editor:
As February slips into history and we mark the end of another Black History Month, let us remember a lady from Cape May Court House who once was memorialized by having her name on a section of the Middle Township Bike Path: Vera Lennon.
Each time I bike past the corner of the Carl O. Baker Recreation Building at the Davies Sports Complex, I remember the day when there was fanfare to remember Mrs. Lennon, including her widower, Livingston Lennon, a World War II veteran, who later also passed. A small plaque proclaimed her name to all who passed that place and that bike path area.
Sadly, the years were not kind to her name plaque. It has disappeared, with it, the memory of Mrs. Lennon, who was a shining light in our town.
Some charitable person or club may see fit to revive her memory so that, once again, Mrs. Vera Lennon will be remembered along the bike path.
We should use this month to remember those of our community who are gone yet whose mark they made earlier. Too frequently we honor those of national stature while forgetting the local champions who worked diligently to improve the lot of us all.
