To the Editor:
I want to compliment Publisher Art Hall for addressing the idea that the ethical and moral foundations of thought and action in this country have apparently gone missing. At this strange time in our ever-evolving history as a nation, people who have devoted their lives to understanding how our world, from far-distant galaxies to our individual cells, actually works, just to further human knowledge, just to continue moving forward, are often shouted down by those with no motivation besides the lust for more power, more fame, and more money.
Truth has to compete with fakery in many arenas, as we see just about every day. So we need to find, either again or for the first time, some universal ethical standards.
I’m aware that some find them in religion and some need to find them independent of religion. That there are sharp differences between people of strong faith, but in different belief systems, in different parts of the world, with different histories. I don’t have a definitive answer.
There may not be one that will satisfy across the array of cultures that exist here today. Maybe the best we can do is to try to be, as Hall shows us that he is, looking for a path, a set of guidelines, toward a better way to live and approach the infinite.
It’s clear to me that whether you see infinity as God or as a universe built on the laws of physics, we humans have tried in the past and must still try to establish better justice, better ways of perceiving those who are different from ourselves, and a more fair opportunity to experience a decent life, right here, right now, for the short time that we get to walk on this Earth, as it is called, God’s Green Earth.
