To the Editor:
I feel so much safer now that our freeholders made Cape May County a gun sanctuary, even if it is just symbolic. Symbolic of what? That anyone should have the unquestioned right to own and carry military assault weapons. For what? For killing deer?
Timothy White (Herald Feb. 26) did not make just a simple mistake. He was irresponsible enough to bring his two handguns with hollow-point extra lethal ammunition to a state with some common-sense gun laws; plus not have the resources to make bail.
Either he was too irresponsible to know this was illegal or didn’t care if it was illegal. Where was he going with these weapons, to a motorcycle rally?
So we had a subject, armed with two weapons mixing it up with other armed aggressive males. This sounds to me like a recipe for disaster.
It seems to me like when someone wants the right to drive a killing machine, like a car, they must at least educate themselves about it and pass a test.
I support no private ownership of assault weapons, no clips with more than 10 rounds and a requirement to educate oneself about how to properly own a gun, have a background check and pass a national test to prove they are informed and knowledgeable about the huge responsibility of owning a gun.
