Nature in Trouble

Letters to the Editor 2019

By Barbara Oberholtzer, Villas

To the Editor:

As I listen to concerns over smoke from Canada and wind farms off our shores, I find I’m more concerned about something everyone can change if they have a mind to do so.

This spring, I have had more than the usual number of rabbits visiting my yard. And they are eating the lettuce in my garden! Well, you may ask what’s so unusual about that? In all my years of gardening (and there have been many), the wildlife has never bothered my garden crops. It got me wondering what is different this year?

Then it occurred to me how many homes in my neighborhood have turned their weedy-grassy property into stones and cement. More stones, less grass, less food, not only for the resident rabbits but for the insects on which our bird population depends.

People! Do you not comprehend the balance of nature? For convenience, you sacrifice what nature needs to survive (and let’s not forget about the poisons that are necessary to keep those stone-filled yards grass free).

This was once an area of mature trees, shrubs and grasses that nurtured an abundance of wildlife (have you seen a box turtle or toad recently?). Our wildlife is struggling to compete for the decreasing amount of food and shelter available.

If you chose to live here because of the natural beauty you saw, please do all you can to preserve and encourage it. And don’t even get me started on tree removal!
